  • Orthodox in worship; progessive in Praxis. Liturgical practice should never be confused with 'values'. Anna's offers incense, sanctus bells, usually three holy ministers, and elevations of the sacred specie. The sermons at St. Anna rarely reflect political issues other than the inclusive nature of Jesus' ministry in fact there are no secular symbols in the church. The rosary is said before mass, benediction of the blessed sacrament on occassion. About 30% of the congregation is "gay"; 70% straight; 50% below the median income (a working class parish); 20% african american; and median age between 35-45. There are more than 10 children in Sunday School. As a matter of history Anglo Catholic Churches in the east end of London were known as 'social justice churches.' St. Anna's reflects those self same values. The priest is, a part from human sexuality positions, very orthodox in practice and belief. The liturgy is wonderful, accessible, and reflects the diversity of the neighborhood that it is in. Most feel so welcomed that they join the church; one of the fastest growing Episcopal Churches in New Orleans.

Although the website promises a "solemn high Mass" (which normally implies conservative values), this church definitely is left of center and not afraid to show it. I found the sermon to be highly political rather than religious, and the parish is clearly very pro-gay. As a straight man I was in the minority in the congregation, and did not feel comfortable. I will not be back.

  • During our trip to New Orleans, we were delighted to discover this small, quirky treasure on the edge of the French Quarter. Though the service was "High Church" to the max, we enjoyed a diverse congregration, including members of the LGBTQ and two-spirit communities. Later, in speaking with a parishioner, we learned that St. Anna is in fact THE gay church in NOLA. They are also building a center for pride groups, at-risk communities, health and wellness. This is something we want to support. On our next stay, perhaps during Southern Decadence, we will definitely revisit these fine, friendly folks!

  • It's a wonderful place to be and every time I'm their it's feels so good. The children that attend the church and center are such sweet children.

  • St Anna's is a place where God is truly present. They are welcoming to all. It's a parish where the Gospel message is shown in their commitment to social justice , ending violence in new Orleans, feeding the hungry, promoting positive change in the lives of children in the treme neighborhood and providing medical help to anyone in need.
